New protections for renters come into force

New laws proving more rights for renters have come into effect, proving renters with more protection, and making renting your home safer and fairer.

From November 25, the below key reforms are now in force:

  • Rental bidding now banned

    • This makes it illegal for agents to accept offers above the advertised price

  • No-fault evictions are now banned

    • No Victorian can be kicked out of their home for no reason

  • Notice periods increased from 60 to 90 days

    • Offering more time to find a new home if given a notice to vacate

  • Properties must meet minimum standards

    • Before being offered for rent, all properties must meet certain requirements

  • Smoke alarms must be correctly installed and tested every 12 months

This Labor government is on the side of renters, delivering 150 reforms to ensure renters in Victoria are properly protected under the law.

Next year, more reforms will be introduced, including the Portable Rental Bond Scheme, which means you will never have two bonds held simultaneously when moving homes.
