Treaty marks a new era for Victoria

Victoria's parliament has passed landmark legislation, signing a Treaty with First Peoples.

This is the first such treaty in Australia, and recognises the need for meaningful change – enabling self-determination to flourish, for the good of all.

The contribution of First Peoples to our great state has been monumental, but we need to understand and recognise the strained relationship our First Peoples have with our modern-day state, and reflect on the impact and enduring harm of colonisation.

The Yoorrook Justice Commission told us as much, as we heard firsthand the stories of First Peoples and how they've been affected by our state's history.

This Treaty marks a commitment to a better future - together with First Nations Peoples.
